Michigan Law: All drivers under 18 must complete Segment 1 and Segment 2 before obtaining a full license. Segment 2 may not be taken until at least 3 months after completing Segment 1. Learn more →
Foundation Course
Segment 1
The required starting point for every Michigan teen driver
Segment 1 is the foundational classroom course required by Michigan law for all teen drivers. Covering everything from traffic laws and road signs to defensive driving strategies, this course gives new drivers the knowledge they need to stay safe on the road.

Requirements
- Must be at least 14 years, 8 months old
- Valid Michigan ID or birth certificate
- Parent or guardian enrollment consent
- No prior driving experience required
- Attend all 24 hours of instruction
- Pass the Segment 1 final exam
Advanced Training
Segment 2
Advanced skills required to complete Michigan's graduated licensing program
Segment 2 builds on the foundation of Segment 1 with advanced driving scenarios, night driving, highway skills, and hazard recognition. This course is required by Michigan law and must be completed before a teen can obtain a full Level 2 license.

Requirements
- Must have completed Segment 1
- Must hold a Level 1 license (Learner's Permit)
- At least 3 months must have passed since Segment 1
- Must be at least 15 years old
- Attend all 6 hours of instruction
- Pass the Segment 2 final exam
In-Car Training
Behind-the-Wheel
One-on-one in-car instruction with a certified driving instructor
Our Behind-the-Wheel program pairs your teen with a certified instructor for real-world, in-car driving experience. Sessions are tailored to each student's skill level and focus on building genuine confidence and safe driving habits in real traffic conditions.
What You'll Learn
- Starting, stopping, and steering control
- Parking — parallel, perpendicular, and angle
- Navigating intersections and traffic signals
- Lane changes and merging
- Residential and highway driving
- Backing and three-point turns
- Road test preparation and tips
Requirements
- Must hold a valid Learner's Permit
- Recommended after completing Segment 1
- Parent or guardian must sign waiver
- Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes

What age can my teen start Segment 1?
Students must be at least 14 years and 8 months old to enroll in Segment 1 in Michigan.
How long does the full program take?
Most students complete the full program (Segment 1, Segment 2, and BTW) in 4–6 months, depending on scheduling.
Do you offer evening or weekend classes?
Yes. We offer weekday, evening, and Saturday sessions to fit around school and family schedules.
What happens if my teen misses a class?
We work with families to make up missed sessions. All required hours must be completed before a certificate is issued.
Is Behind-the-Wheel required by Michigan?
BTW is not required by state law, but it is strongly recommended. It significantly improves road test pass rates.
